Wall Street Journal columnist: analysts refuse to see real impact of abortion

William McGurn of the Wall Street Journal has joined the list of columnists intrigued by Maria Hvistendahl’s new book Unnatural Selection, which decries the widespread practice of sex-selection abortion.

The odd thing about the Hvistendahl book, McGurn notes, is that the author cannot tear herself away from her feminist commitment to legal abortion. His Journal column adds, however, that this blindness is not unique. On the contrary it has become commonplace for analysts to lament the consequences of abortion, even while refusing to grapple with the question itself. Thus:
Only a few months ago in New York, a pro-life group put up a billboard of a beautiful black girl under the tag line, "The most dangerous place for an African-American is in the womb." Within weeks it had been taken down, not because people were upset by the 60% African American abortion rate but because raising the question in progressive New York is apparently beyond the pale.

  1. William McGurn is a notable Catholic conservative. Most bishops are trying to run the William McGurns out of the church.
